Abstract:
Children’s literature is the gateway for many elementary school students to expand their
knowledge on a plethora of different topics, specifically cultures different from their own.
An analysis of ten common themes found in thirteen pieces of children’s literature set in
southern Appalachia served as the basis for the writing of a new children’s book. Eight
of the ten Appalachian themes were included in a new book, titled Sam’s Big Move,
targeted for the early elementary school student and complete with illustrations.
Accompanying the book is a lesson plan based on Pennsylvania Department of Education
Standards to assist teachers with using the book in the classroom.
