- This thesis presents a comprehensive design proposal for a Food Forest on the Ross Student Farm at Penn State, informed by a survey of existing food forest literature and best practices. Food forestry is a sustainable agricultural strategy that produces high yields of fruit, nuts, and herbs with a comparatively lower environmental impact than current standard agricultural practices. Implementing a Food Forest on the Student Farm will serve not only as a resource for crop production but also as a highly engaging educational tool that models sustainable agricultural techniques and Indigenous food sources to the Penn State campus and community. Through research on Indigenous American foodways and forest management practices, the design proposal reflects a planting strategy that mimics the succession of forest ecosystems, composed primarily of native edible plants.
