Variability Reliability
Older Adults - Abstract:
- Blood Oxygen Level Dependent (BOLD) signal is an indirect way to measure activity in the brain through hemodynamic activity using resting state functional magnetic imaging (rsfMRI). The variability of this signal has been linked to brain health and cognition, with increased hemodynamics indicating greater neural activation. However, the reliability of BOLD signal variability has not been studied in the context of traumatic brain injury (TBI). Using back to-back 10-min rsfMRI scans this study observes the reliability of the BOLD signal in the default mode network (DMN) in a sample of elderly patients with varying levels of TBI. In our data analysis the TBI group had higher BOLD variability than the healthy controls (HCs). It was also found that the reliability of BOLD signal variability was higher in the TBI group than the HC group. This could imply that higher reliability measures can be used as a biomarker in TBI status.
