Abstract:
In this document the voltages of batteries and group amperage readings during the operation of the Norfolk Southern 999 electric yard switcher locomotive will be analyzed and examined. Initial background research was completed pertaining to previous battery powered and hybrid locomotives. Various tools were developed to extract and analyze the data in such a way that it could be easily understood and useful. Macros were created in excel to extract data, display battery averages and minimum voltage readings, and plot data. The macros were designed to enhance the ability to uncover potential trouble areas and trends within the data. A similar algorithm was created in MATLAB to verify and fine tune battery models and to aid in the analysis and understanding of the battery system.
