Abstract:
Navigating Space through Narrative: An Investigation of Three Tim Burton Films as Social Commentary is a two part thesis. Part one is an analysis that deconstructs The Nightmare Before Christmas, Edward Scissorhands, and Corpse Bride using a theoretical framework that includes theories by Karl Marx, Antonio Gramsci, Louis Althusser, Stuart Hall, and Walter Fisher. The themes of Burton’s films are then considered with regard to center and periphery struggles and audience perceptions. Part two is a performance art piece that utilizes the themes found in the analysis of Burton’s films in conjunction with Mikhail Bakhtin’s theories on the carnival and the dialogic. It culminates with the performance of The Carnival of Curiosities.
