Abstract:
My thesis is an investigation of Denis Diderot’s critique of religion in Western society, particularly regarding Christian religious conversions in foreign countries. Diderot argues that Western attempts at religious conversions to Christianity negatively and dramatically impacted the Tahitian culture, stripping it of its natural form. I draw conclusions as to how these attempts at conversion caused such corruption in this society and left a lasting impact on this culture, based upon Diderot’s critiques of Christian conversion practice in his text, the "Supplément Au Voyage de Bougainville."
