Abstract:
Mobile applications are making their way into many businesses, such as hospitals and banks. While they have been slow to take hold in the manufacturing sector, their benefits are becoming clearer as companies like General Electric implement mobile devices in their facilities. Tablets have proven useful for sales representatives, customer service, and even Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP) software. Tablets can offer a host of advantages through easily-accessible features, allowing connectivity no matter where employees are. We present arguments for using mobile applications in manufacturing facilities, as well as an implementation of such a mobile app, developed for Apple’s iPad, that helps employees and supervisors track problems from the shop floor. This implementation highlights the advantages of using mobile applications in manufacturing facilities and demonstrates the feasibility of developing such applications.
