Abstract:
The purpose of this study was to explore the ways in which young adults with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) establish and maintain romantic relationships. The data were collected through semi-structured interviews by three participants diagnosed with high-functioning ASD or Asperger’s Syndrome. Participants reported difficulties in initiating relationships, resolving conflicts when in relationships, and terminating relationships because of their deficits in social and communication skills due to their ASD diagnosis. Results indicated a need for continued research to develop evidence-based treatment approaches to support young adults with ASD to develop and maintain healthy and successful romantic relationships.
