Abstract:
Anyone wishing to preserve a historic home or battlefield discovers there is a clearly-outlined procedure already in place. Unfortunately, owners of historic farms and farm buildings seeking to preserve their properties struggle to find a comparable process. This thesis seeks to rectify the problem by supplying a manual or handbook for Pennsylvania farmers who wish to preserve their farmsteads and structures. The thesis is divided into two parts. The first part examines existing research in order to provide an overview of the current state of affairs surrounding the historic preservation of farms and their unique buildings. The purpose of this section is to establish a clear rationale for the second part – the handbook. In the second part, the thesis provides a comprehensive yet practical easy-to-read handbook designed to guide farmers as they attempt to preserve their farmland, historic houses, barns, and outbuildings.
