Abstract:
This honors thesis is a translation from French to English of the writer Michel Butor’s art historical survey titled 105 Oeuvres Décisives de la Peinture Occidentale. I have translated the final fifty pages, which roughly covers modern art, beginning with Post-Impressionism. The introduction covers the background to the book, problems of translation, and a note about word-image relationships and what this thesis represents to me.
