Korea housing density hanok
Abstract:
Though it comes with it’s faults, the office-tel housing typology is unquestionably an authentic product of contemporary, Korean culture. However, it is divorced from vernacular style and traditional values. ‘Hanok/한옥,’ is traditional, Korean housing. It is known for its curved roof, inherent sustainable design elements, and for its use of natural materials including wood, stone, earth and paper. Construction of Hanok housing largely halted in the mid 1900’s, as it is horizontal in nature, rarely going above 1 story in height.
A new and effective housing typology can be created by combining beneficial characteristics/design features of existing office-tel and Hanok typologies. In addition, this proposal incorporates aspects of social housing through shared communal spaces and private/public spaces in order to successfully accommodate the surrounding community and site.
