Abstract:
This thesis investigates how church architecture has evolved with the changing social, political, and cultural role of the Catholic Church. Some of the greatest changes came about from Late Antiquity to the Early Medieval period, as Christianity established itself as the dominant religion of Europe. The transition from the house churches of the 4th century into the grand cathedrals of the 11th century tracks with the Church’s growing role in the social fabric of Europe, as well as broader trends in the visual languages of power and piety.
