Abstract:
Social Studies classrooms establish lifelong connections to citizenship, the world’s
society, and our past, present and future. Teachers in these classrooms need to have the tools to
support their students academically, no matter their background or ability. I focus on the specific
symptoms that cause the need for extra support in today’s classroom. I argue that the social
studies teachers, and teachers in general, need to be given the proper training and support needed
to build the structure in their own classroom. Schools, teacher-prep programs, and the teachers
themselves need to join the fight for equitable education for all.
