Traditional theatre processes follow a strict set of hierarchies. From the donors and producers who provide the money to the board members and artistic directors to the designers, performers, and critics, there are systems in place that control whose voices are heard and whose art is deemed worthy of compensation. In this interview-based thesis, forty-two different theatre artists from around the world discuss their views on this model. Through the lens of devised theatre — a diverse assortment of collaborative processes in which a group of multidisciplinary artists generate a piece of theatre together in whatever way best suits them — we explore questions of sustainability, accessibility, equity, diversity, trust, vulnerability, and collaboration in theatre.
