Abstract:
This paper will cover the development and current production status of a short video narrative series called “Escapism: How Do You Get Away.” The project presents a triad of young adult escapism experiences, which is achieved through a sequence of abridged interview clips paired with literal and metaphorical shot footage. The pairing of this creative multimedia format with autoethnography methodology acts as a channel for delivering a broader message of introspection and self-inquiry regarding escapism to its target audience viewers.
Encouraging viewers to see themselves, their emotions, and struggles reflected back through the experience of others can evoke this kind of introspective experience. Utilizing an autoethnographic methodology will help me devise questions and personal points of inquiry that were revealed through the development of the project which will ultimately be presented and answered by viewers. The diverse and extensive nature of escapism will be complimented by a fractured nonfiction narrative approach to each video, as well as in the collage format of the online audience response platform.
