Abstract:
Sentence repetition is used for many purposes in assessing language abilities. In aphasia research, sentence repetition is used in a variety of ways in a variety of studies, resulting in a scattered network of this research. This scoping review aims to organize what sentence repetition is used for in aphasia research and to identify future directions of research. Twenty-four studies were included after a search process of two databases and after all exclusions were made. Over half of the studies included were conducted in 6 different languages, and the remaining studies were conducted in English. Results of each study varied as each study used sentence repetition in differing ways. Overall themes of the research are that sentence repetition is used as a minor detail in aphasia ability assessment, the arcuate fasciculus is essential to sentence repetition, and simple as well as familiar words tend to be more easily repeated as opposed to complex and abstract words. Results of each study are explained in the results and discussion section. Future research directions should focus more on sentence repetition abilities in those with aphasia, and specifics are mentioned in the results and discussion section of the scoping review.
