- The goal of this thesis project was to create an inclusive participatory mural painting accompanied by youth with and without disability at an elementary school in a central Pennsylvania town. In 2022, the percentage of children under the age of 18 with a disability was 7% in the United States (United States Census Bureau, 2023). Art therapists use art to support individuals with disabilities. Mural-making can be adapted to suit various group settings and offers a safe place for individuals to process emotions, work together, and practice problem-solving and communication skills (Wilkie, 2018). Similarities and differences within the group members’ skill sets can help the population work together. Some individuals experience cognitive disabilities while others experience physical, and some both and some neither. This project will expand on the literature on mural-making as art therapy and art therapy groups for individuals with disabilities. Observations of community building and the interactions of students, teachers, staff, and members of the community throughout the mural painting process were recorded. Through various adaptations, the mural painting process allowed for everyone at the school to participate, regardless of ability. It is concluded that this mural-making process brought joy to the students, staff, and teachers and will continue to throughout the years ahead.
